Wright brings a unique look at the world of music and shares his favorite Americana artists and stories from his life experiences as a musician, journalist, activist and conspiracy theory avocet.

Mr. Wright is a content creator, critic, and culture curator. He is a contributor to the Huffington Post; a DJ at David Lynch'S Transcendental Music Radio, the former editor-in-chief of Creem and Prince's New Power Generation magazines as well as a writer of films, fiction, and music. He is also a singer/songwriter who has released four solo CDs and one with folk-rock quartet GIANTfingers. And before all of this he was a William Morris agent.
Dusty Wright talks with TMusic.
Q. What is your first music memory?
A. I remember getting a very simple record player with a single speaker from a neighbor's garage sale. It had some silly children's vinyl 45s that would soon be replaced by Beatles singles. "Rain/Paperback Writer" might have been my favorite 45 from that era. And "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys, too. In fact, "Good Vibrations" and "Rhapsody in Blue" are two of my most favorite pieces of music of all time.
Q. Please name 5 of your favorite books.
A. Pictures of Dorian Gray, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Perfume, Stranger in a Strange Land, Geek Love. There are many more...
Q. If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?
A. Make sure that everyone had clean water, food, shelter, and an occupation that was fulfilling.
Q. What would you most like to be remembered for?
A. For being a person who really loved his family, friends, culture, and experiences and shared those experiences and smart culture with everyone he met.
Q. What is your definition of family?
A. A family (traditional or non-traditional) is a small tribe of people that work together in fluid motion to fulfill their destiny on this planet. I'm married with two children and when we're in sync, we really enjoy living under the same roof. But it's a constant give and take so there can be moments of bliss and moments of sheer entropy. It's a circular pattern.
Q. What do you do to keep healthy?
A.Tai chi, nei kung (internal chi kung), meditation, running, tennis
Q. How did you first hear about the David Lynch Foundation ?
A. Well, I was lucky enough to interview David for my webcast series at CultureCatch.com. When I researched him, I happened upon all of his terrific work with TM and his foundation. The man is relentless with sharing his mission.
Q. What was the inspiration behind your single "Round & Round"?
A. The song represents the cycle of life -- physically, spiritually, emotionally. While I used the lyrical motif of love, I've always felt that energy's circular obit is undeniable. Like circular breathing, too. And all relationships most certainly follow an orbit. Whether they survive, well... Around and around we go, the good days, the bad days; the days of joy, the days of sorrow. So many people are afraid of confronting a relationship's downside, but it's really all about that constantly changing balance. And I strived for the music to have a circular hypnotic groove, too.
Q. What brings you bliss?
A. Knowing that I've made someone feel inspired. Whether sharing a story, song, or ear. I think we've become so detached in our current "plugged in" digital world that we forget to unplug and connect on a human level. To enjoy the energy of real communication, face to face, without any artificial interface. If you go to lunch or dinner with me, leave your mobile device at home!
Short description of your radio show:
Dusty Wright's Dusty Roads is a sprawling Americana show -- a little folk, rock, blues, country, roots-rock, et al. -- that offers the listener songs they typically will not hear anywhere else. Sure, I might play an old Johnny Cash song, or Wilco song, or even a Grateful Dead song that may be known, but I'm really programming the show to challenge myself. What would I like to hear if I was driving in my car, or sitting at my desk with a show on in the background. I want these songs to inspire my listeners to dig a little deeper. To hear some new tune or band and say: "Wow, that was cool. Who was that band? What was that song? I need to hear that again!"
